Art or Maths?
In 3C children successfully attempted problem solving in Maths. They were given a set of instructions to make some trees. An example of one of these problems is: there is a tree with 7 trunks, on each trunk there are 7 branches. on each branch, there are 7 twigs. On each twig there are 4 leaves. To involve Maths into the lesson, a maths problem was included such as; one day a woodcutter came along and cut down one branch from one trunk of the tree. He then cut off one twig from another branch. Finally, he pulled one leaf from another twig. How many leaves were left on the tree?
It helps the pupils in logical thinking, mental fluency, perseverance, ability to cope with failure and team work. It also presents difficult concepts, visually making them easier to understand. The children had lots of fun solving these problems in groups and it clearly shows how art integrated learning experience can benefit pupils in meaningful learning of other subjects.
