5L explore the world of Samba!
We had a busy but lovely time in 5L for Curriculum Enrichment Day. Across the morning we listened to some different Samba music and responded through art; patterns; colours; words and images, as well as trying to identify some of the instruments used. We then learnt some of the specific names of instruments used in Samba bands and compared their sounds, responding to different rhythms played by that instrument.
Later on in the morning we had a go at some Samba dancing in the classroom before creating blackout poems reflecting Rio Carnival, which we learnt was full of Samba bands and music. The children thought carefully about the colours and costumes of Rio Carnival and how to show that in their poems. We also had the chance to make some masks or headbands suitable for Rio Carnival, which looked amazing once they were finished!
In the afternoon we enjoyed playing some rhythm games, including using classroom equipment as percussion instruments! We finished the day with a brilliant workshop where we were able to try out various instruments and make our own Samba band! The children were very excited to have a go at the drumming and I was impressed by how quickly they picked up the rhythms and techniques.
